UNSGSA 2022 Annual Report to the Secretary-General

The 2022 Annual Report, written under the theme “Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Growth”, highlights the strategic work of H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA) over the previous 12 months, including in the context of the recently released World Bank Global Findex Database.

Key activities and initiatives highlighted include country visits to Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, along with numerous in-person and virtual engagements, bilateral meetings, and speeches. All these activities contributed to the UNSGSA’s mission to champion universal access and usage of safe, affordable, and effective financial services—particularly for the poor, women, smallholder farmers and micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The role of financial inclusion to help deliver positive development outcomes has been heightened recently as people worldwide continue to deal with a mix of crises. These include persisting social and economic impacts from the pandemic, deepening poverty, escalating climate shocks, widening gender inequalities, worsening conflicts, and more.

As the report details, the Special Advocate continued to reinforce the significance of inclusive finance to help everyone access the financial tools necessary to improve financial health—becoming more resilient and building better lives.
