Basel, Switzerland — 11 November 2025
Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel today to lead a workshop titled “Achieving Stability, Resilience and Inclusive Growth through Financial Health” in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA).
The two-day workshop, jointly organized by the BIS’s Financial Stability Institute (FSI) and the Office of the UNSGSA, is the first global convening dedicated to exploring how financial health is being embedded into regulatory and supervisory frameworks. Organized back-to-back with the BIS All Governors Meeting, it brings together senior representatives from central banks, international financial institutions, and global Standard-Setting Bodies (SSBs) to examine the links between household financial well-being, financial stability, and inclusive growth.
Building on Queen Máxima’s earlier address to the BIS All Governors’ Meeting in March 2024, where she underscored the importance of household financial health for stable and resilient financial systems, the workshop marks a new milestone in collaboration between the financial stability and financial inclusion communities.
During her visit, Queen Máxima held bilateral meetings with several key partners to discuss how financial health can serve as a foundation for stability, resilience, and inclusive growth. She also took part in a high-level panel discussion titled “Why Financial Health Matters for Central Banks and Regulators,” alongside Governor Eli M. Remolona (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) and Jean-Paul Servais (Chair of IOSCO and FSMA Belgium), moderated by Pablo Hernández de Cos, General Manager of the BIS.
Queen Máxima’s participation signals an important step forward in strengthening coordination between the BIS, the SSB community, and the financial inclusion ecosystem, reinforcing global efforts to embed financial health at the core of financial stability and inclusion agendas.
