On June 5, 2026, Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), will speak at the opening of the 35th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Riga, Latvia.
The EBRD is a multilateral development bank owned by 77 countries from 5 continents, as well as the European Union and European Investment Bank. Held under the theme “Volatile to versatile — economies innovating in a changing world,” this year’s Annual Meeting will bring together representatives of government and business to explore how economies can adapt to current global realities.
During the opening session, Queen Máxima will participate in a conversation with the Secretary-General of the EBRD, Milica Delević, about the importance of embedding financial health into the bank's work. Supporting individuals and households to save better, spend efficiently, and invest in their short- and long-term goals will build confidence and resilience that can have a powerful impact on overall regional stability.
Over the course of the day, Queen Máxima will hold bilateral meetings to discuss financial health directly with key attendees, including with the President of the EBRD, Odile Renaud-Basso and other EBRD leaders. She will also pay a courtesy visit to Mr. Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of the Republic of Latvia.
Queen Máxima holds a leadership role on financial health in her home country of the Netherlands, where she is honorary chair of the Netherlands Financial Health Foundation (Stichting Financieel Gezond Nederland – SFGN), and the Money Wise Platform (Wijzer in Geldzaken).
